Asset Flooring Group are proud to be a partner of the Interface ReEntry carpet recycling program. Carpet has become a top 10 worldwide landfill item. Taking more than 50 years to break down carpet is a growing environmental problem. In 1994, Interface started revolutionising the way carpet is manufactured and recycled. In fact, Interface invented the world’s first carpet tile recycling program working towards ‘closing the loop’ on the use of non-renewable raw materials and fuel. Known as ReEntry™, this program has been extended to accept carpet tile from other manufacturers, as well as their own.

ReEntry™ accepts used carpet tiles from all kinds of manufacturers, subject to them being in a condition suitable for recycling or reuse. If the components of the tile are compatible with the recycling program, the product will be used as postconsumer content in the manufacturing of new carpet tiles. Most vinyl/PVC backed tiles will be compatible for recycling. If not suitable for recycling, carpet tiles are instead put into a reuse program, where they will be given a second chance at life. In both cases, the carpet tiles are kept out of landfill and Interface takes responsibility for their end-of-life management.

Asset Flooring Group so far has taken back over 3000m2 of carpet tiles.

Today’s hygiene standards demand that surfaces must be smooth and easy to clean, and that walls are durable, impervious and resistant to hard knocks. Traditionally, ceramic tiles have been used in food retail areas but now they are seen as unable to address modern demands for hygiene and durability.

Altro’s new semi-rigid wall cladding is designed to overcome the deficiencies of ceramic tiles in such an environment. Altro Whiterock can be used practically anywhere, but is particularly suited to areas where hygiene is of the utmost importance. Unlike a tiled surface there is no grout needed, so dirt and bacteria have nowhere to hide.

In addition, Altro Whiterock does not crack or chip, further enhancing the hygiene experience but also adding a far greater durability element.

When the new Foodworks store in Sydney’s West Ryde was being developed, the managers wanted an open and clean delicatessen for their customers to see into. They specifically did not want customers to see chipped tiles and dirty grout in their serving area down the track.

Asset Flooring, an accredited Altro Premier Whiterock Installer, installed the wall cladding.

“When discussing the project, we told Altro we needed a walling for the deli that was impact resistant and hygienic. We wanted something that would take whatever the store could dish out. The clean, smooth finish of Whiterock was a great alternative to dirty grout that can build up on tiles over time. Altro Whiterock has solved the store’s main problems, all within the specified budget.”

Daniel Grenda, Store Development, Foodworks

“The process in which Whiterock is installed allows 2 men to efficiently install the sheets with minimum fuss. The thick bed of adhesive and sheet size gives you flexibility to move the materials into position whilst improving productivity on site and ensuring program deadlines are met.”

The Power of One

Altro K30™ & Altro Everlay A™

One of the grandest old ladies of Australian architecture has seen more power struggles than any building in Australia. Old Parliament House (OPH) in Canberra was home to Australia’s Federal Parliament from 1927 until it was superseded in 1988. It then became a ‘living museum of political history’ and a major tourist attraction, hosting many events and art exhibitions. It is a nationally listed heritage building.

However, Old Parliament House is now being updated to ensure it retains its position of power in Australian history as we move deeper into the 21st century. Partially re-opened in Autumn 2009, this grand old building is undergoing a major redevelopment. This is where Altro came in.

First contacted by the OPH Facility Manager to provide some technical advice for the kitchen floor, the Altro consultant discovered they had a competitor’s safety flooring product which was not only non-complaint but had also been incorrectly installed. Naturally, it failed after only 12 months, causing much damage to the sub-floor. Major works were required to rectify and bring the floor up to satisfy Australian Standards.

The solution was to utilise Altro’s Single Point of Contact services to install the Altro Quicklay System. The Quicklay System is a combination of Altro KR12-30, Altro’s highest rated product for slip resistance, with Altro Everlay A ensuring that installation downtime is kept to a minimum.

Working in tandem with our experienced partners, Asset Flooring Group and their fully trained installers, and building works consultant PBI Australia, Altro arranged everything to rectify the problem.

The project was delivered on budget and ahead of schedule – actually in 5 days instead of the scheduled 2 weeks! The works delivered to the customer included removal of fixtures and fittings and existing floor coverings, rectification of falls to wastes, and supply and install of the Altro Quicklay System. All while complying with heritage building legislation.

The power of using one point of contact.

“This was the best experience I have had with service contractors in my 35 year career. I must admit that I was very nervous to start with, however within hours of Altro starting the work my concerns were put to rest. They must have sent me the best crew in the country.”

Gerald Monahan, Old Parliament House Facility Manager, Canberra
